This project intends to introduce Latinxs into historical representations of stand-up comedy in New York City. For far too long, the contributions of Latinx stand-up comics have been absent and omitted from histories of the comedy industry business, perpetuating narratives about how belonging and cultural production are racially framed in the United States and how Latinxs fit (or do not fit) into this framing. However, New York City is the birthplace for dozens of Latinx comics who, as early as the 1960s*, have been making people laugh in comedy clubs, sports arenas, bars and restaurants, university performance halls and even in Washington Square Park.
By showcasing oral histories, this project intends to introduce their stories and recover their impact on US and New York City comedy.
